Description:

Windows to Linux Migration Toolkit

By David Allen

HIGHLIGHT
Microsoft is discontinuing support for Windows NT Server in December 2004, which will force over 2 million enterprise customers to migrate from Windows NT to a new server platform. Microsoft envisioned all these customers upgrading to Windows Server 2003, but in the first 2 months of 2004 over 50,000 customers have migrated away from Microsoft to IBM Servers running Linux. Tech research firm Gartner reports that in 2003 Linux represented the largest growth market in Server sales, and predicts the trend to continue away from Windows to Linux. Every day IT Managers and SysAdmins face the same basic problem: How do I deliver the most reliable, full-featured, secure, and user-friendly network services at the lowest cost? More and more often, the answer is Linux running open source software. Many users of Microsoft’s network services software are frustrated with costs, licensing restrictions, and security limitations. In addition, Windows NT Server users face a tough choice in December 2004: Migrate to a new platform, or be cut off from support and security updates. [Add additional info about market share of Linux / open source] Linux is the fastest-growing server OS platform, and is supported by Dell, IBM, HP, Sun, Oracle, Sendmail, PeopleSoft, and most other well-known software vendors (with the notable exception of Microsoft) Most of the e-mail and web servers that enable the Internet to function run on open source software and operating systems, including Linux. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
David Allen has been working in the computer field for over two decades. He has worked with international banks (Schwab, Credit Suisse, JPMorgan), technology companies, and government organizations. David is an expert in security, messaging, enterprise directories, and global-scale mission-critical systems architecture and deployment. David has been an Open Source advocate and speaker for several years. He has personally migrated over 25,000 users from Windows to Linux.

TECHNOLOGY BACKGROUND
Microsoft has dominated the enterprise server market in recent years capturing 55% of the market in 2003. In that same year, however, the market share of Linux grew faster than any competing operating system and rose to 23% of the worldwide market. In addition to greatly reduced costs, most research groups credit Linux with being significantly more reliable and secure than offerings from Microsoft. With Microsoft discontinuing support for Windows NT at the end of 2004, system administrators must decide whether to incur the expense of upgrading to less reliable and less secure products from Microsoft, or to migrate to far less expensive Linux servers now being offered by hardware giants like IBM and Dell.
